Summary: The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding
Comment: As a Board Certified Lactation Consultant this is the book I recommend most to my new parent clients. It is easy to read and full of the most accurate information available to have a successful breastfeeding experience.

Summary: Very encouraging, informative book for breastfeeding parents (-to-be)
Comment: This is my favorite book about breastfeeding, offering a lot of very helpful information about the how and why and what to do if things don't go smooth. It covers many different topics. The appendix offers a long list of other titles for those wanting more in depth information as well as several lists of breastfeeding products and organisations that offer support and where to find them.
Many have commented that this book is written only for attachment-parenting parents. La Leche League's mission is to provide mothers with information to help them establish a successful breastfeeding relationship with their babies. If someone had a negative experience with an individual representing LLL that doesn't mean that LLL is judgmental or unaccepting/intolerant of mothers who don't stay home with their babies or mothers who don't wait for their babies to self wean.
I found this book to offer information that also encourages me to follow my intuition and to listen to my baby since as a mother I am the expert on my baby.

Summary: Too judgemental and pushy
Comment: I really do not like this book. I am all for breastfeeding but in this book they really talk down to you and act like you are terrible if for some reason you choose not to or can't breastfeed. Also they don't give you a whole lot of helpful advice on how to do it, they try but The Nursing Mother's Companion and Spilled Milk are two books that you should buy instead of this one.

Summary: If you like to be judged, read on
Comment: I hated this book.When I tried to nurse my first child, who had multiple health issues at birth, I felt like a failure. Needless to say, this book compounded that feeling and made me feel like I should have a big "L" tattooed on my forehead. I recommend "So That's What They're For" by Janet Tamara. She makes you laugh, all the while giving you invaluable tips for every "nursing" roadblock you could run into. LaLeche League needs to get over their snooty selves and realize that there really is no ideal breastfeeding woman. We all have our own way of doing things and that's what makes the world go 'round.

Summary: Great Information at a Great Price
Comment: I bought this book upon recommendation from my Bradley Instructor. Some people learn well watching videos, or talking to people, or just doing it and figuring out what works - some people get information from reading about it and educating themselves, and if you are that person, this book is for you. And the subject matter is too important to not inform yourself. This book gives straightforward, common sense information, benefits to YOU and your baby, as well as statistics on the health of breastfed vs. bottlefed babies. Anyone interested in empowering themselves with real knowledge about this timeless art would benefit from buying or even borrowing it, although I marked up every other page of mine :-)
