Summary: A definite must for all who wish to understand meditation...
Comment: ...from the inside out! Kabat-Zinn knows meditation and its benefits on health and well-being. Having conducted extensive and conclusive studies on the effects of meditation (specifically mindfulness), his book takes those findings and places them right in your lap. Each short chapter is a lesson in itself and each one is a lesson worth learning. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to go beyond meditation, to understanding just how and why meditation is so beneficial... especially in this day and age!

Summary: Great advice but he takes his time telling it!
Comment: Jon Kabat-Zinn is one of the leading authorities on alternative medicine in America. I've rummaged a bit and read a few review articles and white papers on the field and his work demonstrating the effectiveness of mindfulness-based meditation is widely-regarded as the gold standard by the medical establishment (aka, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality or ARQH, a government funding agency). Thus, I approach his work for the public with utmost respect. I've studied mindfulness-based meditation as part of my treatment for my own medical problems and it has been as effective or more effective than medication or other therapies. Dr. Kabat-Zinn's descriptions of meditation practice, benefits and accompanying philosophical approach are important and of great benefit to people like me. However, I do wish he had a better editor. Without being circumlocutory, rambling, or verbose, nevertheless, his writing is horribly un-concise. Like a great apple tree, his writing needs some careful pruning. I find myself fighting the words to absorb the meaning. Nevertheless, once I get past the verbiage, there is wisdom in this book.

Summary: Much Too Much
Comment: As another reviewer has noted, this book is about four books in one. As a person who is very aware of the wonderful books on meditation available today, of which Kabat-Zinn's Wherever You Go There You Are is one, I recommend that you not waste your time and energy on this one.

Summary: Insightful
Comment: This is a fantastic read and a book that I will keep for decades to come as a reference. I also have Wherever You Go There You Are and they both serve a different purpose and compliment eachother well.

Summary: Hopeful handbook for healing through meditation
Comment: At 600-plus pages, this deeply philosophical book may challenge some readers. But Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, an accomplished scientist, thinker and author, imparts his wisdom in short, easily digestible chapters. He says you can have a more peaceful, contented life if you are open to exploring the spiritual realm and the practice of mindful meditation. Kabat-Zinn, who cites studies and personal experiences, presents convincing evidence that meditation reduces everyday stress, and can help treat depression and fear, chronic pain, cancer and other serious illnesses. We believe that everyone can benefit from reading this mindful treatise - even those who are already healthy, wealthy and wise. Highly recommended.

Editorial Reviews:

Now in paperback, the guide to living a meaningful life from the world stress expert

"[The] journey toward health and sanity is nothing less than an invitation to wake up to the fullness of our lives as if they actually mattered . . ." --Jon Kabat-Zinn, from the Introduction

Ten years ago, Jon Kabat-Zinn changed the way we thought about awareness in everyday life with his now-classic introduction to mindfulness, Wherever You Go, There You Are. Now, with Coming to Our Senses, he provides the definitive book for our time on the connection between mindfulness and our physical and spiritual wellbeing. With scientific rigor, poetic deftness, and compelling personal stories, Jon Kabat-Zinn examines the mysteries and marvels of our minds and bodies, describing simple, intuitive ways in which we can come to a deeper understanding, through our senses, of our beauty, our genius, and our life path in a complicated, fear-driven, and rapidly changing world.

In each of the book’s eight parts, Jon Kabat-Zinn explores another facet of the great adventure of healing ourselves -- and our world -- through mindful awareness, with a focus on the "sensescapes" of our lives and how a more intentional awareness of the senses, including the human mind itself, allows us to live more fully and more authentically. By "coming to our senses" -- both literally and metaphorically by opening to our innate connectedness with the world around us and within us -- we can become more compassionate, more embodied, more aware human beings, and in the process, contribute to the healing of the body politic as well as our own lives in ways both little and big.
