Customer Rating: Summary: The 10th Edition Of Backlash Comment: United States Champion MVP vs. Matt Hardy - What many concider to be the most entertaining feud on SmackDown continues here as they go back & forth with MVP working on Hardy's previous injuries that kept him out for the longest time. However, Matt Hardy proved he was better than MVP by winning the U.S. Title in the end.
ECW Champion Kane vs. Chavo Guerrero - Well, if you blink during this match then you won't miss anything unlike WrestleMania. Another good match with Chavo trying to work over Kane's leg to take him down. Eventhough this looked like a mismatch, it was a good encounter.
Big Show vs. Great Khali - Well, normally a Khali match is a smaller wrestler being a complete spotmonkey & overselling Khali's chop/kick/repeat moveset but, with Big Show being able to look eye to eye with Khali, we got a better effort from Khali than we normally would as he even at one point tried to execute the crippler crossface (no, that wasn't a typo). But in the end, Show chokeslammed Khali for the win in what was Khali's best solo effort in his career.
Shawn Michaels vs. Batista with special referee Chris Jericho - Unlike WrestleMania, Batista brought his A game here against HBK. This was a power vs. scientific match which had HBK pulling out a suprize ending. There was a little tension with Jericho as the referee but he didn't play as huge a factor as expected.
Mickie James, Maria, Ashley, Michelle McCool, Cherry, Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix, Melina, Jillian Hall, Layla, Victoria, Natalya - In a nutshell, this was a very fast paced match that allowed everyone to get a spot in or two & have most of the divas look good in the ring. Nice match but nothing special.
World Champion Undertaker vs. Edge - This match (and feud) can be summerized by the phrase, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" because the match was very similar to their previous WrestleMania (and future Judgment Day) match in that the match just got better as it went on with great wrestling between both men.
Elimination Match: WWE Champion Randy Orton vs. John Cena vs. Triple H vs. JBL - A great main event as I personally like the elimination rule in triple threat/fatal four way matches more than the "first one who gets the pin/submission wins" stipulation. This match started off wild with all four men facing off against each other but after the first two eliminations in Cena & JBL, Triple H & Orton delivered a match that rivals their No Mercy encounters as their best match against each other before the King Of Kings went back on his throne. Moments to look out for here was JBL & Orton trying to "out heel" each other from the opening with Orton & the World Title to when each guy was in a submission hold while the other taunted him.
In the end, I thought this was one of the best overall Backlash events in the 10 year history of the event & the great followup to WrestleMania. There wasn't a bad match on here & it's an event I do recommend.
Customer Rating: Summary: Very Good!! Triple H Rules!! Comment: Very good DVD, Triple H is the BEST Wrestler in the World, this is a must have, now that the Game is 12 times champion.

WWE United States Championship:
MVP (Champion) V. Matt Hardy
Good opener and storyline here with a predictible ending. Hardy has been chasing the US title for about a year and he finally wins it. ***1/4
ECW Championship:
Kane (Champion) V. Chavo Guerrero
decent little match here with really nothing to write home about. Kane retains. **
Big Show V. Great Khali
probably what you can expect from those two, but there was actually some wrestling in it (i'm not saying that it was any good). Khali destroys Show for the whole match and Show gets two minutes of offense in and wins. WWE has been doing that alot lately. 1/2*
Shawn Michaels V. Batista
Great match with great wrestling. Michaels wins after faking an injury. ***3/4
12 Diva Tag Team Match:
Mickie James, Maria, Ashley, Cherry, Kelly Kelly, & Michelle McCool
V.
Beth Phoenix, Melina, Jillian Hall, Victoria, Layla, & Natalya
decent women's action here with Phoenix' team picking up the win. **
World Heavyweight Championship:
Undertaker (Champion) V. Edge
awesome match, I like it better than their WrestleMania match. Counters all over the place in this one and Undie retains with the Triangle Choke. ****1/4
Fatal Four Way Elimination Match for the WWE Championship:
Randy Orton (Champion) V. John Cena V. Triple H V. JBL
another awesome championship match. They eliminated Cena and JBL at just about the same time to make it one-on-one between Orton and Triple H. Then they have a great match within the match and Triple H ends Orton's third title reign. **** I don't know what Triple H has against Orton, but Triple H has ended all three of Orton's title reigns and has only lost to him once in one-on-one encounters on PPV. It just doesn't seem right.
Overall a very good show. Good opener with decent matches thrown in here and there with Michaels/Batista being great and the WWE and World titles matches being just awesome to watch.
Customer Rating: Summary: The 10th Edition Of Backlash. Comment: Backlash is one of the most entertaining events that come right after WrestleMania. Even at times, much like the 1999 & 2007 editions, the event turns out to be better than the previous WrestleMania event. Backlash 2008 delivered some solid contests that were the aftermath of WrestleMania XXIV and for the most part, I would say that I was satisfied.
United States Champion M.V.P. vs Matt Hardy. This was the end of one of the most entertaining rivalries that Smackdown has produced. Arguably the best one, next to the awesome 2007 rivalry of Taker & Batista. This was a good opener that would start off slow in the beginning but soon would gradually pick up towards the end. We have seen better from these two but this is still a solid contest.
ECW Champion Kane vs Chavo Guerrero. This was the match that we should have gotten at WrestleMania instead of the squash match that we received. This match could have been better but the storytelling was there with Chavo showing that he can handle the Big Red Machine until the odds soon caught up to him. Again not a classic, but a decent effort by both men.
The Big Show vs The Great Khali. I remember thinking this is going to be a trainwreck. Luckily, I was somewhat surprised with this one. It is still not that good but Khali actually uses a few wrestling holds & Show knew how to sell them that makes this one watchable. Decent at best & Khali's best effort, which is not saying much neither.
Shawn Michaels vs Batista w/Chris Jericho as the guest ref. The storyline was well played off that had me waiting in anticipation for this clash. HBK brought out the type of performance in Batista that he had not shown since his awesome series with Undertaker. Most of the match is fought at a calculated pace with Shawn targeting Batista's arm, but once things pick up, they get good & the surprise ending added more to this one. I will say that Jericho was really not need for this one, no disrespect to him though.
Beth Phoenix, Melina, Jillian Hall, Layla, Victoria, & Natalya vs Mickie James, Maria, Ashley, Michelle McCool, Cherry & Kelly Kelly. Let me just say this quickly about this contest. Basically, the women who can wrestle in this match (we know who they are) carried this one in order for everyone to shine & get their moments in before the finish occurred. Simple as that...
World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker vs Edge. The continuation of what has become my favorite rivalry of the year & the result is another awesome confrontation that rivals their WrestleMania classic. As I & other reviewers have pointed out, Taker & Edge matches do not rely on high intensity, fast paced action that ends quickly. Instead, Taker & Edge wrestle a solid contest in a much slower pace that has the action pick up at certain times for the crowd to react from. There is a little interference factor near the end but I can not complain because Taker & Edge have yet to let me down with their previous & future battles. I am not sure which one is their best & don't care about which is, but this is the best match of the event.
Fatal Four-way Elimination Match: WWE Champion Randy Orton vs Triple H vs John Cena vs J.B.L. My personal opinion is that most of these triple threat matches are better when they have that elimination stipulation added to them. This is a great match and solid way to end the show as these four meshed well together & even at points where you did not expect the elimination to happen. I like being surprised, even if at times I don't agree with it. A funny moment to point out is the interaction between Orton & J.B.L. when both are placed in submission holds & each man taunting the other to quit.
As far as ranking this event with the other Backlash events, that will be for the fans to decide. For my taste, I would say that this one was better than the 2002 & 2003 editions but I am nitpicking, this Backlash has a good ratio of solid matches that even the minority of fans would enjoy.
Customer Rating: Summary: Does WWE Survive The Backlash of Lost Potential? Comment: We've come to the WWE's 10th edition of BACKLASH. Man, how time flies for a WWE addict like me. While I can't say this is my favorite of the "WRESTLEMANIA Sequel" Series, I do recommend a peek.
1) United States Championship
Matt Hardy v. M.V.P. (champion)
---My favorite feud from 2007 was sadly cut short due to Matt's health. Well, I waited patiently for this showdown, and I have to say I'm mildly disappointed. The opener flowed well, with the two rivals delivering a variety of holds and moves to each other. But the whole match just felt...what's the word?..."soft". High-impact spots seemed a tad weak, and signature maneuvers were kinda predictable. I'm thrilled Matt won his first respectable singles belt, but I don't think tonight was one of his (or MVP's) better performances.
"6.5 out of 10"
2) ECW Championship
Chavo Guerrero v. Kane (champion)
---A pretty solid title contest that made Chavo look like the championship material I believe he is. Chavo got to showcase his technical skills a bit, while Kane's powerhouse offense was even more entertaining. The closing moments (and Mike Adamle's commentary) were a little sloppy, but still enjoyable. If you can suspend the disbelief of Kane being dominated by a man half his size --- and it IS a tough sell, indeed --- than you'll enjoy yourself. I personally would like to see these guys compete again.
"6.5 out of 10"
3) The Great Khali v. Big Show
---Khali's greatest match since his WWE debut 2 years ago. Is that saying much? Absolutely not. However, I have to admit that these two monsters kept me entertained for the most part. These two behemoths were knocking each other off their feet, delivering slow "powerful" punches, and mat wrestling? You read that right; there were submission holds in a Khali/Show brawl. Also, there were some neat "epic" camera shots. Most of the time, I give a "5" to matches that disappoint me. This time, this "5" is a tremendous compliment, because this guilty pleasure could've been a heck of a lot worse.
"5.5 out of 10"
4) Special Referee - Chris Jericho (Intercontinental champion)
Batista v. Shawn Michaels
---Easily my favorite storyline so far this year. Ever since Ric Flair was retired at WRESTLEMANIA 24, these three men have engaged in a compelling grudge with none as the clear fan-favorite. I've read some complaints that this BACKLASH showdown was too slow. My answer is, "Did you think HBK would go full force at a man who could crush him?" I admit this grudge match took some time to get moving, as Michaels worked on Batista's arm for a pretty long time. But when the two started exchanging moves and counters, then it got really good. Throw in an unusual finish, and it all turned out to be mostly good stuff.
"7.0 out of 10"
5) 12-Diva Tag Team Match
---I'm gonna shake things up a bit, and address some Divas with a letter:
MICKIE JAMES, MELINA, and BETH PHOENIX: "You three are awesome, and are making the Women's division entertaining again."
MICHELLE MCCOOL and VICTORIA: "You both need to petition to get on RAW as much as you can. You're both wasted on a show with no belt to win."
NATALYA: "I've seen your pre-WWE work, and you are a tremendous competitor. Sorry your WWE PPV debut gave you nothing to do."
TO ALL 12 DIVAS: "You all didn't do much better than your 10-Diva SURVIVOR SERIES contest. I liked how you all got more time to compete than last November, and liked the finisher fest that closed things off. But you all were kinda wasted tonight."
"4.5 out of 10"
6) World Heavyweight Championship
Edge v. The Undertaker (champion)
---My review is going to be pretty much the same as my WRESTLEMANIA and JUDGMENT DAY comments, because I love this match! But I'll try to solve this mystery once again: why do Edge and Undertaker entertain me so much? Was it the IN-RING ACTION? I don't think that's it, because Edge and Taker execute an admittedly-slower contest, which we've seen from hundreds of other guys. Was it the PSYCHOLOGY? I'm not sure that's the answer either...Wait a second...that's it!...only a different kind of psychology that I'm used to. Most wrestlers today seem to be played by the crowd, but Taker and Edge are playing us. They're don't make nods to previous matches, talk to the crowd, or signal their finishing manuevers a lot. They both just seem to competing in a real fight, and it challenges 'US' to give into 'THEIR' pacing. It doesn't even look like performing to me anymore; it's that seamless! So which is the best Taker/Edge match? Who gives a rip! Watch them all ASAP!
"8.5 out of 10"
7) Elimination Match - WWE Championship
Triple H v. JBL v. John Cena v. Randy Orton (champion)
---This main event is one of the worst good matches I've ever seen. Strange praise, I know, but let me explain. First I'll mention the good stuff. The 4-way Match was much longer than the WWE Title Match @ WRESTLEMANIA, and the action was more creative. So why am I upset? Partly because the first two eliminations occured within 11 minutes, and both of them were at the same time. I felt kinda jipped, because while I'm not a Cena fan, I'm sure he had more to contribute. Once JBL and Cena were gone, HHH and Orton battled for another 17 minutes, which made the other two guys plain filler. Orton and HHH had a good faceoff for their portion, but you wouldn't know it from Baltimore crowd's indifference to the whole thing. Last year's BACKLASH 4-Way Match made us believe anyone could win; tonight was too predictable for my taste. Overall, I enjoyed this Elimination Match. But even after 28 minutes of bell-to-bell action, I felt there was plenty more these guys could've done.
"7.0 out of 10"
FINAL THOUGHTS
---If you compile an average of my scores, BACKLASH 2008 doesn't seem much. To be honest, I think there's a lot of lost potential here, as only Undertaker and Edge delivered all the way.
My personal score for BACKLASH 2008 is ***1/2. I'm gonna bump it up to 4 stars, because even though I'm slightly disappointed, it wasn't because WWE or the superstars weren't trying. This PPV has little filler, and like 2007's superb BACKLASH, you can see the effort.
If you're a picky wrestling fan like me, you might not get into this one. But if you're a casual fan who thinks I just rambled way too darn much, then BACKLASH 2008 is more than worth a look.
