Summary: different from what i thought it would be
Comment: the trailer makes this movie look like a jake black free for all comedy. i am not a big fan of j. black but i was looking for a stupid movie to enjoy while a little drunk. i really enjoy mos def's character in 16 blocks so i was happy to see him in something different. my problem with this movie is that its actually a warm felt movie with a different plot and very moving performances. it was a good movie just different from what the trailer looks like

Comment: I got this film on Blu-ray and decided to review it. Be Kind Rewind was an unusual film directed by Michael Gondry, the French director who made a couple of music videos for artists like Bjork so he has a certain style and visual flair which he also uses in his films, he is very creative and talented and definitely has an eye for a great setup or a memorable scene. The film was about these workers in the local VHS rental store called Be Kind Rewind, one day the local weirdo Jerry played by Jack Black tries to sabotage the small electric company relay station across the way and gets himself magnetised, he manages to wipe all the VHS tapes in the store. This off course causes alot of problems since all the rental tapes are now blank and the store can't operate. The store owner Mr. Flatcher (Danny Glover) went away for a while on a recon mission so it's up to Mike (Mos Def) and Jerry to make a plan so they don't lose their customers. Then Jerry comes up with the ridiculous idea of remaking shorter versions of the flicks with them as the leads, since Mike is desperate to not lose his job or his promise to the store owner he goes along with Jerry's idea. The store is located in a rundown part of the city in Passaic, NJ suggested as the birthplace of "Fats" a legendary jazz musician, the employees also have to save the building and this is where the community joins in and a lot of the locals become extras in the film and it takes off to point the movie lawyers put a stop to proceedings.
During the story the shop itself is under threat of demolition to make way for new apartment blocks. The film had a couple of daft and goofy characters that were engaging and interesting to watch, the film also had a bit of charm while not a laugh riot like some of Jack Black's other films like School of Rock (Widescreen Edition), Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny or Shallow Hal it still is a good film with an original storyline and some great moments the funniest part is probably when they were trying to recreate Driving Mrs. Daisy and no one even remembers that film, I have to admit though the ending was a bit too sappy. The films that both characters were making ended up looking pretty good (O.K. not all of them, some were abit lame) and shows that even average normal people can make something creative with filmmaking techniques and no budgets, I also felt abit nostalgic it reminded me of the time when I use to rent at the video store and it seems like VHS nowadays is the thing of the past and there aren't alot of people who buy or rent VHS anymore not only that but I'm watching this film on Blu-ray which is kind of ironic. The 1080p picture quality on this Blu-ray dvd looks stunning and I found it to be excellent throughout, while being subtle and detailed. The 7.1 DTS HD soundtrack was both subtle and refined and not in your face or loud. It matched the on screen action just as subtly as you would want. Overall the film was great while not the best Jack Black film I've seen it was pretty close and it had a good cast of characters, if you're a big Jack Black fan like myself then you'll definitely enjoy this.

Summary: Sophomoric silliness
Comment: There's a time for improbable plots, dressing up in wild costumes, bad boy (but not too bad) pranks, and feel-good endings. This amusing flick suits those times.
Plot elements work together nicely. Although goofiness takes center stage through nearly the whole movie, a more serious plot provides background and contrast. It's the little guy up against the big bad system, under attack from every direction - including a hard-edged incursion by Sigourney Weaver, recycling her heartless Katharine Parker role.
I saw this as an in-flight movie on ten-hour trip. It suited the more sleep-deprived moments of that flight quite nicely and, since the flight's entertainment was free, it was worth every penny to see it.

Summary: If only the entire movie had been sweded...
Comment: I had enormously high hopes for `Be Kind Rewind'; the premise, the actors, the whole concept behind this film just looked like prime comedic entertainment. Sadly, `Be Kind Rewind' doesn't deliver as solidly as it could, and should have. It has its moments, and they are great when they actually happen, but I found that the film tried too hard to deliver sentiment and in the end wound up sacrificing the comedy.
In other words; there are large segments of this film that are downright boring.
The film follows two friends, Mike and Jerry, as they try and recreate popular films with their handheld camera and neighborhood friends. The reason for this is that Mike was left in charge of a video store, and Jerry, his best friend, accidentally erased all the videos when he got himself magnetized. In fear of losing business for his boss Elroy, who is already fighting the town to keep his store, Mike and Jerry decide the only way to save the video store is to make fakes (sweded). The movies are shorter, rougher and completely ridiculous, but they are a major break from the norm and become a local phenomenon.
When the cast is amerced in the filmmaking process the film is outright perfection. Their recreation of `Ghostbusters' is a total laugh riot, and the sporadic clips of remade films like `Boyz N the Hood' and `Rush Hour II' are brilliantly staged and captured. The concept around each films creation is flawlessly entertaining, and the actors all have so much fun doing it.
But sadly, when they are not gallivanting around impersonating your favorite screen characters, the film tends to fall a little flat. The whole back-story of the famous jazz musician that supposedly was born in the small town (Passaic New Jersey) from which the film spawns is decent but its place within the film should not have taken priority. It could have been a nice segway into more comedic territory but instead it proves to be the films major plot point, thus taking away from what should have been the major focus. Thus, the beginning and end of the film are dreadfully detached from the heart of the film, and I found my attention wavering. The middle of the film is entertaining throughout, but getting there and leaving there is another story altogether.
I am not always a fan of Jack Black's humor, but here he works very well. Mos Def is not nearly as funny (he's a much more serious actor) and I think that the initial casting choice of Cave Chappelle might have worked a little better in keeping the film funny throughout, but I like Mos Def in general and found him to be effective when necessary. The supporting cast of Danny Glover and Mia Farrow are not used as well as they could have been though, but when they are on screen they do a stand up job. The films real star is Melonie Diaz who was just incredibly flawless as the duo's leading lady Alma. She steals every scene she inhabits and proves to be the focus of the audience's attention.
The direction of the film is nicely handled, the style behind it making the film itself feel about as homemade as their faux productions. The dialog and interactions between characters feels very real, not Hollywood at all. The film moves as if you were to stage a camera in your living room and just record your friends all day long. This aids in creating the natural comedic feel of the film, I just wish that the material had been tightened a little to allow the comedy to really remain the focal point of the film.
`Be Kind Rewind' is not a bad film, but it could have been so much better. I still recommend checking it out; you may enjoy it far more than I did. The meat of the film is perfection, but the films potential wasn't fully realized as far as I am concerned.

Summary: Ok movie, but a crappy ending
Comment: Jack Black and whatshis face star in a movie about a small Harlem video store that hires out VHS videos only. Danny Glover plays the owner who goes away to check out competition and leaves whatshisname in charge. On his way out he tells him to not let Jack Blacks character into the store while he's gone cause he destroys everything he touches.
However whatshisname doesn't get the message clearly and lets Jack Black in. Jack has a crazy idea that nuclear power should be stopped and goes out to try and destroy the power plant but only ends up electrocutes and becomes magnetic.
While magnetic, he walks past all the videos and erases them. So him and whatshis face come up with an idea to re-make the movies themselves, they call Sweeded or something, and it becomes a small hit with the locals who are demanding more and more of these remakes.
The story sounds like it could have been great, but the ending of this movie just does not pay off, not for me anyway, I thought this whole idea could have been something great if they had some better ideas. But it just seems to rush from amateur movies to a plot in the end that I thought could have been re-written a lot better.
At most i'd recommend you rent this, or do the torrenty thing, but even if you wait for it to be on tv, i dont think you will kick yourself thinking you missed something you wish you'd seen when it came out.

Music-video-director-turned-auteur Michel Gondry continues to charm with his low-tech offering BE KIND REWIND. Set in dreary Passaic New Jersey the comedy centers on two of the town's residents: trouble-making Jerry (Jack Black) and well-meaning Mike (Mos Def). Mike works in a video store in an age where the VHS is long dead but the store's owner Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) doesn't seem to be in any hurry to change. When Mr. Fletcher leaves town for a trip he entrusts his store to Mike with one piece of advice: don't let Jerry in the store. But after some mischief Jerry returns to the store in a strange state. Not only is he weirder than usual but he's also magnetized which causes the entire store's stock to be erased. In order to keep the struggling business afloat Mike and Jerry begin remaking the films in the store one by one. Their hilariously low-budget versions of films such as GHOSTBUSTERS and RUSH HOUR 2 soon begin to draw attention and business to the store but that creates a whole new set of problems for the pair. Though Gondry's three previous fiction films--HUMAN NATURE ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP--were all essentially love stories BE KIND REWIND captures another kind of romance. Both the writer-director and his characters are in love with the cinematic medium itself and their devotion shows. BE KIND REWIND doesn't reach the heights of ETERNAL SUNSHINE but it doesn't seem to be aiming for that genius.
